Hello Everyone,

A couple months ago a relative of my got out a mini bike that he had in his barn for the last few years. We got it running then I decided to restore it. It turned out to be an APC Mini Harley and has been fun to work on. I ran into a couple issues that I need help with so I thought I'd create an account and ask the experts!

Problem: The original throttle cable was broken, I found one that was the proper length for the correct type of engine but the total pull of the cable is almost 2" too long. I'm not sure what I can do.

More Detail: There's about 1" from the throttle connection to the stop at the carb. When I have that a the proper resting lenght, there's nearly 2.5" of cable at the grip end. I can't move the adjustments enough to take the slack out. Thoughts?

Sometimes it's easier to get the right throttle cable ....

Thanks for the link. I'll give it a go and report back. I found one with a similar description but didn't specifically say for the mini harley.

No problem and you're welcome...…...


I turned a mini harley into a stand-up scooter...Luckily for me I was able to still utilize the t-cable..




I also turned another into a twin enginned speedster.....

I've enjoyed the pictures I've seen of your double engine one! That thing looks pretty cool.

I got the throttle cable in tonight and while a little long, the throw worked a lot better! Thanks for the help.

I got a few more parts sand blasted tonight but still have some more paint to remove before I can powder coat them. Once that's done and I get the last couple parts, I'll be able to reassemble.

Did you put the pusher spring on the carb to help the throttle close off alot easier...

I wasn't going to because when I took it off it felt like it was going to fall apart in my hand. When I inspected last night, it was sturdier than I thought so I put it back on. I'm waiting for one more part for the fuel line and I'll be able to fire it up and see if I can get it to run without choke.

Very cool man...It sounds like youll be pretty good after going over all of the basics...

Have you checked the flywheel and the coil visually to see if theyre rusted?

Rust hinders the way these small engines run...........

Theres also an internal fuel strainer inidethe pumper carb that may need cleaning aswell as a way to dial in the carb adjusting the LSN/HSN combo needle to start-up easier and run without the choke.

I've not done much with small engines in the past so I'm getting used to it. I didn't tear the engine down but I did check the clutch. It was running before I took it apart but I figured the carb was varnished from sitting for 3 years. I gave it a good cleaning and we'll see how that works.

I think I got the fuel strainer cleaned when I took the carb apart and cleaned it.

Ignore the messy garage! :)

I kick myself for not taking better before pics but I never meant to tear it down this far.
It usually goes like that for most........LOL

Looks pretty good and also good to see the dual rearwheel setup replaced by a cateye rearwheel..........

Have fun with it and take care ecornwell........Let us know when you want to breathe double up to triple the power into that tool based engine with simple DIY mods.....

We will be here to accomodate.....

I wanted to keep the stock look but I was looking at one of those pancake filters with the velocity stack. Are there links on here I should look at?

Oh... I just thought of a question. I've read I should add oil to the gear box but what I've read and the user manual I found don't line up. What weight and how much should I add? It was empty when I took it apart.

use RTV or make a gasket or use both to seal the transmishon check and see if the shafts have seals then use ATF just enuff for the chain to pick it up and fling it around in there

How does adding more power via basegasket delete and mild porting change the outer look of the engine??...Ive built engines that appear to be bone stock with a HP carb n airfilter when you look at them but thats where the similarities stop when you hear and ride them....LOL

No pressure I figured Id throw that out there in advance because it alsway seems that after a short while of riding them almost all want more power eventually.... :']

After mild mods this scooter gained 9mph over stock engine on same gearing....85% of the stock engine parts were modified and reused....





Those transmissions were lubed with food safe vegetable grease by a chinese kid in china..Its so if a ship goes down the ecosystem isn't polluted by petroleum based products....

You can use trans fluid in the amount like kitty stated or you can use any light duty oil synthetic preferably....I mix a lil white graphite chain lube in with the oil made by Next Dimension..

I read the words and I'm 90% sure they were English. :tango_face_grin: That's about where it stopped. Looks like I have some more research to do.

I have a feeling my kids are going to be terrified of this thing when I'm done but I'll love it!

LOL....Research isnt really necessary with these tool based engines made to work on rideables…

As far as your question on the saucer type airfilter and velocity stack...They work a lot better than the stock airfilter box


One thing for sure is that by slightly inceasing compression by losing the basegasket then feeding that extra compression with more fuel by widening the exhaust and intake ports aswell as slightly widening and polishing the main transferports,modding the flywheel,the clutch the intake plus the carb and the exhaust and youll have built yourself an engine stout enough to put a smile on your face aswell as have the ability to be geared for even more topspeed without sacrificing the bottomend power....

What Im proposing are the simple basic mods.........After you catch the bug youll be wanting to build something fully balanced n blueprinted with the power like this scooter has..LOL

I'm not a machinist by any stretch of the imagination and only really have a basic understanding of internal combustion engines. (More so on the 4 stroke side.) I removed the head off a Briggs 5HP once just to see and that's a far as I've really gotten. I like the idea of working on it but I've got a lot to learn yet!

Well 2 stroke engines are even more basic than 4 strokes.


Theres no camshafts or timing chains to worry about....

All these engines are-are engines that run tools like power augers,trash pumps,brushcutters small generators....


Theyre not like 2 stroke engines made by Suzuki,Honda,Yamaha Kawasaki,KTM,Maico,Husqvarna etc...


Each engine is assembled literally by a chinese kid......Tolerances are all over the place with these engines and depending on the manufacturer which there are many-many brands who make them depends on the type of low second rate quality you get.....

The job of a tool engine is to start-up easy and reliably aswell as deliver descent torque at the lowest speed to get the job done shortly after the power it takes to engage the centrifugal clutch..

The Chinese made so many engines that were supposed to run for only 120-180hours and miraculously thanks to the hardened chrome cylinder they last a lot longer or people cant get them to run right enough to buy replacement parts also to mention people in trades requiring such types of engines buy quality like Echo,Stihl and Husqvarna before they buy the cheap stuff so they have a surplus of millions of engines so they employed Chinese kids to weld and assemble pocketbikes and put the tool engines on them as dirt cheap playtoys that turn into pitfall moneytraps that for some in the end becomes triple the price of the bike brand new...…….

Luckily for me I know what it takes to get them running their best and also do it reliably....
