So a couple of us ride my small pocket bike and my friends go kart around the paved jogging track at a local middle school. We have only done it like three times and even the schools coah saw us and said nothing. Today I happed to be by myself ridding in the parking lot ( it's always after hours btw) and a cop rideing by pulled and and ran up on me and stops me and asked "what are doing" "who else is with you" blah blah blah and I was very nice and polite and he asked for my ID and I gave it to him he then took down my address and phone number and said there have been complaints about us rideing there. Now we don't tear anything up and always stay on the pavement we don't do burn outs and always clean up our trash. He told me we could never ride there again and so i asked then where do we ride and he says no idea and leaves.... What kinda crap is that? Now I have nowhere to ride. Bummed<< that's my story for the day.

Unlucky man, I don't know where your situated or how it works in your area. You should get the owners permission i.e. the parking lot whoever it belongs too. If there fine with you using the premise I'm pretty sure that the cops can't do anything.

Although I doubt they can charge you or fine you or whatnot for riding around there as long as your not driving on the public road.

You should talk to someone who knows the law well and see what your rights are, cause I'm pretty sure cops are more likely to approach youngsters on pocket bikes etc. as your more likely to obey without questions.

If its legal for you in your country/state to record the police then record the whole conversation with your video camera on your phone as the officer approaches you, that could also be to your benefit as they would be more cautious as to what they say or do.

I ride my cags in industrial areas after hours and on the weekends..As long as your riding with safety gear,,are cool with the trash and are respectful of the property you shouldnt get any complaints...just comments and questions every once in a while..

One time someone actually posted a cardboard sign and put it up against the wall where I normally park saying.... minibike dude,,,where can I get one?????? and they left a phone number...LOL........Apparently the place has a camera I found out due to the person I called teling me that they were watching me lap the building like greased lightning and got intrigued......LOL......I always got a place to ride there now but it gets a lil old and new places need to be scoped out...so far I have 6 safe and solid places I can pick from.....

Parking garages here in NY are always open 24/7 except for the ones in the biz district and theyre locked up tight at night

You were riding in a commons area (parking lots) on public property paid for by tax payer dollars. This is like any other parking lot. You can be in a commons area until asked to leave by the property owner. You weren't breaking the law. I don't think you even had to show ID. Sounds like color of law because someone called in.

We have a 1st ammendment of the constitution in america. you can video tape the police on any public property and you can tell them this when they tell you to turn the camera off.

Google "women arrested for chalking sidewalk" recent news. Shes being charged with a vandalism felony because someone called the police. This is the nanny state.

The mayor of your city is a public servant just like the cop is. I don't even have to ask if you live in america I know you do. There's no asking permission to be on public property that's paid for by tax payers especially a parking lot. Public property is what the streets sidewalks, parks, city hall, ect. is. You can ride in a parking lot that's what they say to do on this website. You should have asked the cop "what's the law". They can't answer and they wont answer because there is no law.

Here all our public places have statute signs posted.....Most say no minibikes or motorized vehicles...........I pay more than my fair share of taxes owning 4 businesses,,give to the police athletic league every year,,have PBA cards in my wallet and still cannot get away with riding on public land....I even got harassed using my nitro r/c monster truck in a skate park............It matters who your governing bodies are and the laws enacted for a state, county and town................

One time we had written permission to ride in a public parking lot of a strip mall that was shut down...The cops didnt even want to see the note,,they wanted us gone or they were taking bikes...Thanks to scrappers robbing the storefront pieces and rooftop a/c's we gotta suffer..........

Heres one statute youll get a kick out of...............Even mountainbikers get messed with....LOL

11.5.2 Identified Concerns of the Parks Department

Illegal use of off-road vehicles (ORV) has been identified as the most serious land management problem on County land, with dumping as a close second. The Department has set a firm policy of banning ORV use in parkland. It has been a difficult ban to enforce. However, some motorized vehicles have been confiscated by park police in an effort to curtail illegal use.

Additionally, all terrain bicycles (ATB) are a cause of concern. Generally, mountain bikers use trails designed for hiking where they cause some erosion but are deemed to pose more of a safety problem. The Department plans to designate parkland for mountain bike use and issue mountain bike permits along with safety and courtesy instructions.

They let these bikes into the USA and there is no place to ride. America land of the Free, is a bunch of bull. I have to get a permit just to change a window in my house,Tax, Tax, Tax, Fees, Fees, Fees, what happen to the right to be happy and do what you want??

Yea I'm sure there was no sign like that though in the middle school parking lot. no law either. Total color of law. I guarentee the cop was making his own rules and there's no law about riding on public parking lots. If you can drive your car or a moped or motorcycle around the parking lot, why not a mini bike?

You can't draw with chalk now - this is total tyranny no beating around that fact. to them YOU ARE TRASH, SCUM! If you live in NYC they have some of the worst police that litterally act like gangsters. They get in peoples face for asking directions and on camera, said they were gonna call in a bomb threat when it was a camera cause they were video taping. The police have been federalize in NYC. They've been militerized nation wide. Not saying all police are bad.

You had permission from the property owner and they didn't care - that's color of law. Like I said you can video tape or be on a commons area until asked to leave by the owner on private property. You can be at the 5 star marriot and the owner has to come out to the parking lot and tell you himself I've seen it. The only thing I don't know is if they can even tell you to leave public property. You can stand on the sidewalk all day. I think they'd probably charge you for attempted burglary or something when night time came if you were at a public building or something but then the parking lot puts another spin on it. Back to the issue, unless there's a sign, you should be able to legally ride around in the parking lots. That's a commons area of private property and that's why people say to ride there on this site. Not to mention a parking lot is made for vehicals and is not a street so it doesn't have to be street legal or have plates. And I would always ask - the only thing you should say to police first thing when they want to talk - what's the law. If the owner gave you a written letter with permission, that's legal for you to be there. The cops act like it's their land to make rules on.

I've heard that before about the mountain bikes lol. They're messing with everyone for any reason even if there's no law and they'll trump something up if they want to. If you're a legal citizen you're the enemy. If you're an illegal you are god. The funny thing is, they think it's a video game when they're taking people to jail all day, meanwhile theres factorys attached to the prisons driving down their own wages. Making alot more then just license plates these days.
I see in the article the second commenter saying why not crack down on the drugs and alcohol use in the trail. They want that it makes crime explode and keeps the prices up (like in alcohol prohibition) so the banks can launder the money. And fill up the prisons if you use them. Drug war is a total scam.

It used to be one of the freest and richest countrys. Now people are more concerned with the NFL refs on strike or whatever and with dramas and sitcoms then with the threat of WW3 and things collapsing all around. Not the mention the police state we're seeing, illegal checkpoints, TSA operating unconstitutionally - going on the streets and groping you at the airport or putting you through a radiation body scanner. They want felons and pedos for the job and get cought stealing every week with 100 or 1000's of articles about it. Google TSA cought stealing

Yea it's not a free country anymore. You can't draw with chalk. And that's a good point about the taxes and fees. Most of what the police do is just revenue generate for the city. Meanwhile like in the TV show parking wars, they pay people to go around impounding and ticking people at 10:15 when signs say no parking after 10 in the big citys. and all the other white gloving. They have license plate readers so they can boot cars and impound them. money money money. And all the tickets from the automatic cameras aren't even technically legal because they need to hand signed. This is the new ecconomy sucking off whatever is left from the people. All while taxes are only going up and the economy is only getting worse. They used taxpayer money from the GM bailout 20+ billion to ship the chevy volt factorys overseas and we payed for it. Google gm volt move to china. I'm ranting but you'll only get a 1 or 2 dimentional view of whats going on from the news.

Yep...we get a bad rap and I tried fighting the system to no avail using the" it keeps us out of trouble" rap n such but it gfell upon deaf ears...The county hates having to answer to the federal government why people are destroying the protected and parks land with motorized bikes and their answer is to totally ban them and confiscate them..even our motorsports parks which there are only 2 are in danger of being shut down due to noise and dust clouds..........Ive always said it and beleive I was born 30 years too late because right now id either be dead or not care myself due to being too old...........LOL

Well look what they (bush I think?) did to ban the 2 strokes from the AMA... for emissions.. What are polititions doing in saying what type of engines need to be run on a race track? And why dirtbikes.. And they don't talk about more important issues like deforrestation and over fishing ect.

But you tried fighting it? im sure they didnt want to hear it

What you described as banning and confiscating the parks is Agenda 21 and its in every city. They're also going after peoples land. and telling you what to do on private property. And taking peoples land for pennies on the dollar, turning around and selling it to their buddys and building on it. It's bad look up agenda 21. Look at these 250 sq foot apartments. They want compant high rises and calorie cards. it's agenda 21

lol but you have to care not just for your self but for your kids grandkids or familys future. and there is none. I'm only about half your age so there's nothing to lose really. There's flouride in the tap water it reduces IQ points by 20 and a whole list of brain, bone, and nervous system damage and cancer. The vaccines have mercury (says onthe insert) and live cancer viruses in them admited by the maker of vaccines look it all up. And then it's school policy to take vaccines even though theres no law while you're tought how to be a prisoner in there. They dont tell you there's a waiver and then they go after you for truency when you get kicked out. Most of the college degrees are worthless. We're under assault.

Wow i really stirred up a debate here! haha.. Cant really respond to everything or id be sitting here for hours. Do enjoy everyones feedback for sure. Question is who would i ask for permission to ride the bike at the school? and would it even be worth it.. From what i'm seeing i'm thinking no. Thanks again guys i learned some things by reading these replies and i totally agree about how crappy the world is for hard working tax payers its b.s. My dad owns a auto shop thats 50 years old now and donates so much money to the schools and that jerk off rookie knows i'm sure but whatever i didn't feel like fighting i was already pulling a 15 hour work day and taking a break when that happened. Its like my friend used to say these are the years we are supposed to be having fun and living our lives but nah fat chance on that unless your rich.

Call your police department. Just say you have a question and ask if it is legal to ride a moped on public property parking lots. Then ask about mini bikes. Get the cops name if he says it's legal and you can say that officer told you if they talk to you again.

Or you could just go ride and if you ever get talked to again ask what the law is when they talk to you so you know. That's what I'd do. I ride right down my **** dead end country road and go down to where there's a little neighborhood with a few streets running different ways. if I see a cop I'd kill my bike and push it. If they want to talk I'll talk

Or find another parking lot and you should have no problems.

Wow! They took your bikes and all that? That's rediculous. I can't believe all that. Did the police or people in army clothes pull you over on your pitbike?

See though, even most people at least somehow know something about whats going on. You seem pretty informed. Go figure though, people that understand syphisticated motorcycle mechanics can figure out somewhat syphisticated politics.

Yeah,,,The 70cc clone and the CRF70 got taken on the same day...My friend was riding one......That was the DEC that caught us that day,,,On my XR80 I got spotted by civilian air patrol who called the park police and caught us at the trailer loading the bikes..My friends KLX110 got taken too that day..When I crossed into military property I was spotted by two F-14's by the trail of dust I was kicking up and the Air Force got me at my house but turned it over to the county because I was spotted and not caught on their property..............Like I said I try to fight the system as often as I can but so far They only got four of my bikes in the last couple years..... Im still on top with a whole bunch more................LOL.............

lol ya - too bad they didn't just impound them. I got my pitbike impounded one time for running from a cop. it was like $200. Never again though lol. One othr time when I first got my pocket bike a cop pulled me over cause I was on a long road behind an airport and he just gave me a warning.

Yea I wouldn't ride acrost the millitary bases anymore. by my house there's this Bayer dumping property that they used before they moved back to germany. It had alot of trails alot of people rode there. but people were dumping stolen cars and cooking meth back there so they fenced it off.. Think they're still dumping there and were running 4-5 dumptrucks at a time on one side of the little ~20 acre property. and calling it "clean up" Don't know if it's agenda 21.

Yeah they used to just impound and let you pay to have it released after the case is over which becomes pretty costly especially after paying the fines...Now since theyve been seeing repeat offenders and such so its impound and crush........If I buy a bike for a couple hundred bux and it gets impounded and costs no more than a couple hundred to get it out which it never does;-its always higher like $4-500.00 I just leave it there and buy another cheapie bike even before the case is over to replace it but them days are over for me......Im just glad that they cant catch my bigger bikes like my 3 450's and my 650 with 780bbk.I havent even tried my luck yet with the new KTM but will soon............LOL
