Those engines are pretty reliable when modified right..If you dont do the necessary mods like installing the #18lb valve springs youll get valve float so bad on the top end it will kill the camshaft and possibly bend a valve but not at first..It will most likely happen when you need it the most.

Youll also need to mod the carb to feed the need of the extra revs.If not alls youll accomplish is running it dangerously lean which will cause it to consume oil..

if you go to the affordable go-cart page under predator mods youll see what you have to do to run it without the governor successfully.


Those minibikes are mainly a rigid frame with front springy forks and mineral oil to dampen them.After you convert the offroad rated ATV tires over to D O T legal ones with a much firmer sidewall the harshness of the ride will amplify til it fatigues your body and on a short wheel base bike it happens a lot quicker than say a rigid framed Triumph or Harley...

The electrical system is enough to run the simple headlight..Adding the rest of the do-dads to make it street legal aswell as bright enough to see youre gonna have to run LEDs or upgrade the stator and add a battery somewhere.

Hopefully the hydraulic brake handles have microswitches for activating the brakelight too..If not theres an extra expense of modifying em or buying others..Then youll need a switch panel for the lights high beam/low beam/horn and turn signals..mounts for the mirrors too


One piece of advice about venturing out and selling those things.....

Ride yours first and get a feel for it..Note all its pros and cons and what you have to do to make it worthy and worthwhile and then consider those problems from a consumer standpoint and then imagine all those mindless folks who think its supposed to operate flawlessly and your reputation getting tarnished over a china made product..

If you built them yourself you can also be your own authorized repair shop parts dealer etc.Put the money in your pocket and keep as much of it as you can here in America..

Cabelas sells them under the colman name it's exactly the same thing they are good stock I know a guy that uses his on loging roads for hunting scouts he seams to like it i was going to bypass the governer for him but I looked at it and it was done at the factory ( 7 horsepower ) the crarging system can barely run the head light but the kit i sent you has all led lighting and a battery pack...

one thing to note is it's not like your going to ride the thing wide open you might burst wide open but most riding your going to ride about 1/2 to 3/4

Good advice and I'm hoping the brake levers have micro switches. I don't think I'll be eliminating the governor right away, just bumping the rpms up like I've done on Briggs lawnmower engines. Hopefully the stock valve springs are over-designed enough to prevent launching a valve into the piston at 4,000 to 4,500 rpms. I would do it a couple hundred at a time.

I wouldn't change the off road tires. Like I mentioned, we have no vehicle inspections here, just pay $20 each year and get your sticker. People use unregistered 4 wheel ATVs as primary transportation and the good old boys rarely have mufflers on their pickups. I did get pulled over on my golf cart but the deputy was cool and just advised me it wasn't legal.

There is a WFA (wildlife management area) a couple miles north with lots of trails and open to the public but to get there I have to pass a large women's prison. Cops come and go there otherwise I wouldn't worry about tags. I want to install minimum hardware to present a semblance of legality but I also want functional brake/directional lights for my own protection.

 

I've researched the Coleman bikes and there are differences. The Coleman Trailmaster has rear suspension which is a nice feature but Coleman uses the 196cc 6 hp engine and the rated top speed is 24 mph. The Monster Moto classic has hydraulic disc brakes on both wheels, is powered by the 212 cc 7.5 hp engine and rate the top speed at 33 mph. One thing I've yet to figure out is the horsepower rating on the 212 cc Predator. Everywhere you look it is rated at 6.5 hp but Monster Moto claims 7.5 hp?

 

If it's like the Coleman bikes and it probably is they're getting 7.5 horsepower because the throttle linkages is hooked up to the governor arm effectively bypassing it...

Those Predator engines are pretty good if you run them at half or 3/4 throttle there are a lot of them around here because they like to use them on construction sites by the time they end up in the back of my truck most of the time it's the connecting rod that has let go and they have a hole knocked in the side or they simpley free spin at one time i had 7 of them all broken the same way the dream of makeing a good one out of a bunch of broken ones quickly died and I put them all in the metal bin at the dump they are not worth messing with for the price new at harbor freight...

 

I like my Monster Moto 212 Xmas gift. Two bolts to attach the handlebars and gas was all that was required to get it going. The engine had oil in it already, something I didn't expect. The bad was: flat front tire due to loose valve core, a couple loose bolts, chain was too tight, throttle was hard to twist and a burnt out headlight bulb. Mega Moto is sending me a new bulb and I now have the throttle working properly.

Now it is on to brake lights and turn signals. I found an excellent video that I will borrow heavily from. The guy found a really bright headlight bulb that fits the headlight and used truck marker lights for his front and rear turn signals. All this was operated by a headlight-turn signal-horn combo switch he bought on eBay. His bike had mechanical brakes so he was able to drill and tap a hole for his brake light switch. My little Monster has hydraulic brakes so that is not an option but I noticed the brake lever assembly looks like it is made to add the micro switch. There are 2 screw holes and a place on the lever to contact switch, see photo. I will probably end up making the other half of the brake switch bracket but any help with locating the OEM of the hand brake assembly is much appreciated.

I was also wondering about the 12 VDC from the engine that operates the headlight. Would it be sufficient to keep a small AGM battery charged? I could either charge the battery periodically or upgrade the charging coils I suppose.

 

did you get the link to the kit that has every single thing you need all led lights with a rechargeable Lipo battery that is specifically designed for the application you're using it for???

 

I did check you the link, thanks for posting it for me. The turn signals on the kit would stick out and may get damaged as I make my own trail through the woods. Georgia woods are full of thick vines dangling from trees.

I like the way it was done in the video. Very cheap and easily replaceable marker lights. I would do a couple things differently like mount the battery box under the seat. The bike in the video is a Baja Warrior which is similar to my bike.

 

right on well you can wire it up like a chopper and use a common ground wiring scheme lack of a charging system is going to make for a very short run time with incandescent lights your defentley going to want LED just a hint with LED lighting you need an electronic blinker box the old clicker Style won't work..

 

I think the bike actually has some sort of charging coil since it has a headlight. I may have to install larger charging coils but I intend to have it charge the battery. I I could check out my Briggs-powered riding mowers. The mowers have little voltage regulators with simple wiring.

I ordered 2" round LED turn signals and the turn/horn/headlight switch. I have some 1/8" aluminum plate I'll use to make turn signal brackets. The brake light will be next. I have my eye on a left hydraulic hand brake assembly that comes with light switch, mirror mounting hole and a parking brake feature. For $16 it's not worth trying to add a brake light switch to my present brake lever, which also doesn't have a mirror hole.

The bike topped out at 28 mph out of the box. I hooked up a tach and increased rpm to 4,600 by backing out the throttle stop screw. Speed increased to 34 mph but it surges a little at max rpm so I'm sure I need a larger main jet. Getting my target 40 mph with stock muffler and air filter may be a combination of carb tuning, stepping up governed rpm a little more and going from a 10 tooth to 12 tooth drive sprocket. I love projects like this.

 

What i forgot to ask was does the state you live in require you to carry insurance on it to be street legal?

If so what does the insurance carrier say about getting paid of any bodily injury if the motorbike your riding doesnt meet *** standards?

Had a friend who put an extended swingarm on his ZX11 and he was coming down a pretty steep grade on damp pavement slid sideways slammed into the back of a station wagon with a bumper hitch where the idiot that installed it left the bolts sticking out of the metal bumper like 4" resulting in my friend getting impaled on the screw right through his achilles tendon ripping right through it.

Because the stretched swingarm didnt come stock on the bike and wasnt a dealer installed item the insurance turned a blind eye on him saying the swingarm may of contributed to the cause of the accident/injury.He spent thousands on a lawyer fighting the decision to no avail.He paid over 60 grand to the hospital too.

His new nickname is Gimpy.Whats funny is we used to call him Stimpy..he gotta wear a special rubber band type shoe too for the rest of his life.

 

they are useing a hack from the coils intended for trickle charging a battery for electric start it provides about 1 amp it might hold a charg with LEDs maybe you can add a generator off the chain or something to get some good amps if you try to pull more then the headlight it might burn up the coils

 

As far as the stator if you hook up a voltage meter and see how it charges at normal idle up to 3300rpms then note how it charges at 4500rpm's you can easily figure it out.

You have to see what the volts read at top revs to know if its gonna be strong enough to charge the battery along with a power draw.Some stators peak at a certain rpm then start to drop off.

If you get 50 a/c volts consistently coming out before the rectifier thats 5 amps and plenty for a 4 amp 12v SLA battery...

 

Insurance may be an issue and sorry to hear about your friend's mishap. I won't be changing anything structural, just adding lights. I'm sure the state of Georgia requires insurance. From what I've read any 2 or 3 wheel motorized vehicle with engine displacement larger than 50cc falls into the same category.

I tried to check the voltage at the headlight because the light didn't work out of the box but I couldn't get the leads connected to the tiny plug. I was going to rig something to connect the voltmeter but in the mean time the replacement bulb arrived in the mail and the new 35 watt bulb lights up fine. I was wondering if Mega Moto orders these engines with a charging coil or if they all come that way?

All I had to do to raise rpms was remove a throttle stop screw. Looks to me like the governor was already set to ~4,600 and trimmed back with just an adjustment screw. I'm curious if all predators come that way?

 

onley the ones with electric start come with the 1 amp charging coils and fly wheel with magnets in it from HF it won't charge a battery and run the headlight at the same time this is why the mini bike manufacturers order them without the starter and china is more then happy to provide...

i whould try to find a tiny alternator off like a justy or something and run it off the crank then you will have a plentiful amount of juice.

I know we got a HF e start engine for my buddy's compressor that he uses for sprinkler blow outs and we where very disappointed with how long it takes to put back what it takes out just to start I think it's more for ridding mowers or something where your going to run it for 35 to 45 minutes o well he has to eather get a bigger battery run a wire to the back of the truck with a isolator or climb up there and pull start it at the end of the day...

 

I've yet to see a 212 Predator with electric start. Please post a link if you know of any. I've watched YouTube videos of people using Honda parts to convert the 212 and I see one person selling the kits on eBay.

Harbor Freight lists two 212cc engine part numbers, 60363 and 69730, one being the hemi version but neither have electric start. Even the 301cc has no listing for electric start although the 420cc seems to come standard with electric start.

 

A guy in the cycle kart forum repowered his Baja bike (originally equipped with a 212 Predator) with an off the shelf HF 212 Predator and no more headlight. He had to take the flywheel and charging coil off another Honda clone to get his headlight working again. This tells me the 212 on bikes with headlights has something extra in the way of a charging circuit. According to the parts list for a Monster Moto 212 Classic there is a rectifier/voltage regulator somewhere on the engine.

My headlight bulb is rated at 35 watts. If you do the math a 1 amp output at 12 volts is only 12 watts. My bulb appears to be as bright as it should be so it must be putting out at least 3 amps. 3 amps at 12 volts converts to 36 watts.

you can buy the coils and flywheel off the web it's no big deal then it can supply a little power for an hour meter a small light for some gauges or a head lamp on a snowblower or in your case a headlight for a mini bike

Those are just Chinese knock-off engines of the Hondas they're pretty close to being exact copies the only difference is that internal clearances and machining in the Metallurgy of the steel itself where Honda has much tighter tolerances

So all you need to charge a battery is a bridge rectifier and a voltage regulator then some kind of charging circuit so it doesn't overcharge the battery but you probley will never have to worry about overcharging unless you ride for 2 hrs with no lights on

 

Quick update. I decided to contact Mega Moto on what is under the flywheel of the 212 Predator. I'm told it has a stater and puts out 7 amps so I'm good to go!

 

Okay I went ahead and did the research for you it's actually two coils each coil is rated for 1.5 amps each for a total of 3 amps at 3800RPM

 

That would likely be a stock 212 Predator which has no voltage regulator like the one on the lower priced Monster Moto 212 with no head light. The Monster Moto 212 Classic has additional wires coming from behind the flywheel feeding AC current to a rectifier/voltage regulator mounted on the frame. Here is the email from the lead technician at Mega Moto:

"Yes there is a stator under the flywheel that powers the headlight. It produces AC electricity that fluctuates with engine RPMS . The voltage regulator converts to DC that is a constant 12 V 7 amp. I can not recommend any particular brand of aftermarket lights as they will not be covered under the MM warranty.

The mention of aftermarket lights is in reference to my comment on the cheap headlight bucket that has already cracked. Photos of turn signals I made using aluminum from an old stop sign and LED truck marker lights and the voltage regulator.

 

you used led light's so you have nothing to worry about 🙂 like we said from the get go lol...
